On Thursday, October 5, 2017, the Bar Association in conjunction with the Courthouse Artwork Restoration Committee, held the annual Jones Award Dinner. The Honorable Susan Philips Read, retired Judge of the Court of Appeals of this years recipient. Judge Read was introduced by the Honorable Richard E. Sise, Presiding Judge of the Court of Claims. Three restored pieces were unveiled by Judge Spain: a painted portrait of Martin I. Townsend, Esq., a proclamation and a silver loving cup given to him by the Bar Association. Martin I. Townsend, Esq., is remembered as one of the most famous of all local attorneys of the 19th century.
On June 8, 2017, the Bar Association held its Annual Meeting and honored David T. Garvey, Esq., and Patrick T. Maney, Esq., as 50 year members of the bar.
New Officers and members of the Executive Committee for 2017-2018 were elected. President Olivia Karis-Nix recognized and thanked Immediate Past President James Prout for his service to the Bar Association. The Bar Association is looking forward to an exciting year ahead, working on its mission of serving members of the bench, bar and community of Rensselaer County.
This year Rensselaer County had five area high schools competing: Catholic Central High School, Columbia High School, The Doane Stuart School, Emma Willard School and La Salle Institute.
Co-Coordinators Olivia Karis-Nix, Esq., and Jessica B. Mocerine, Esq., wish to express their gratitude to those who served as judges: Supreme Court Justice Richard J. McNally, Jr., Nancy Bergman, Esq., Anne Coonrad, Esq., Michael Derevlany, Esq., Linda Johnson, Esq., Keith Muse, Esq., Michael Shanley, Esq., and Jennifer Shatz, Esq.
Thank you to the following attorneys who served as legal advisors to some of the participating schools: Monica Skanes, Esq., Vitaliy Volpov, Esq., Cynthia Tippins, Esq., and John Fischer, Esq.
A special thanks to the Honorable Richard J. McNally, Jr., for judging our finals held on March 22, 2017, between The Doane Stuart School and Emma Willard School. Emma Willard School was our County Champion and will move on to the Regionals to be held on April 29, 2017, in Montgomery County.
Also thank you to Richard Reilly, Chief Clerk of the Rensselaer County Courthouse and courthouse staff for all of their assistance during the tournament.
